Excerpts from FOUNDATION THEME- 40 YEARS OF NATION BUILDING
Before 1965, Singapore had never expected to be an independent sovereign state, but circumstances forced us to choose the seemingly impossible task of building a nation. 40 years later, we can certainly look back and feel proud of what we have achieved. In these 40 years, we have progressed and thrived to become a well known “little red dot” on the world map. Our 40 years of independence, have brought about much change, none more so than in its people. As our Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong put it in his National Day Rally, a “generational change” had occurred from the immediate post independence era.
Our 40th National Day will be a day to recognize the contributions of our elder generations for their commitment and perseverance in bringing us to where we are today. At the same time, it is also a time to celebrate the vitality and exuberance of our younger generation as we continue to build upon what our forefathers have achieved. With the strong foundations laid by the elder generations, our younger generation stands ready to shape the future and take Singapore into the next lap.
